Sergeant, Troop G, 7th US Cavalry. Born Olaus Hansen Nordeeg in Nannestad, Akershus County, Norway, his name was Americanized when he came to the US. A member of the 7th Cavalry under General George A. Custer, he participated in the Sioux Campaign of 1876, that led to the Battle of the Little Big Horn. During that battle, he was in Company G, commanded by 1LT MacIntosh, and rode with Major Reno's battalion into the Little Big Horn Valley, later retreating to the Reno Hilltop, where he survived the battle (1LT MacIntosh, his commanding officer, was killed in the valley retreat). Approximately 40 percent of the 7th Cavalry survived the battle.

From the Lawrence County Vital Statistics: Death of Northeg, Olans H., 5 November 1882, suicide, age 38.

Olans had a second enlistment on March 21, 1872, in St. Louis, Missouri, by Lieutenant Peter Vroom, giving his previous occupation as clerk. He was discharged on March 21, 1877 at Fort Abraham Lincoln, Dakota Territory, as a sergeant of very good character. He was court-martialed in August 1879, however, the record of the court-martial is lost. He had gray eyes, fair hair, fair complexion, and was 5 feet, 9 1/2 inches tall. He is listed as Olans H. Northeg in the Register of Enlistments, and as Olans Northeg on his gravestone. Other names used in official records are Alans Nathey, Orland H. Northey, and Orlaus Northeg (spelling in the late 1800s was not an exact science, and was often phonetic).
