Ann Howe, R.N., of Lake Ariel, died in the Mercy Hospital Hospice Unit after an illness. Her husband was Paul Howe. The couple celebrated their 24th wedding anniversary on Nov. 27. Born to the late Frank and Catherine (Hughes) Gilhool, she was a 1948 graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale, and a 1951 graduate of the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. She was a member of St. Thomas More Church. She served as a captain in the Air Force.

Prior to retirement she had been a registered nurse in hospitals in New York City, Virginia, and at Wayne Memorial Hospital. She was also the long-time nurse for Dr. Vincent Tulley in Honesdale. She was a member of the Retired Nurses Association, the Red Hat Society, and a volunteer for the American Red Cross.

Surviving are a stepson, Peter and wife, Kathy Howe, of Downingtown; a daughter, Janet Bursis and husband, Jeff, of Scotrun; three brothers, Francis X. Gilhool and wife, Ann, of Shrewsbury, N.J.; Harold Gilhool and wife, Jean, of Honesdale, and Kieran Gilhool and wife, Joanne, of W. Webster, N.Y.; four sisters, Mary Vosefski and husband, Jack and Florence McCarthy and husband, Thomas, all of Webster, N.Y.; Jeanne Vosefski and husband, Walter of Jermyn, and Grace Bognatz and husband, Donald of Carbondale; three grandsons, Emerson and Marshall Bursis, and Patrick Howe; several nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Jack, Paul, and William Gilhool.

A Memorial Mass was celebrated in St. Thomas More Church, Lake Ariel, the Rev. Phil Altavilla officiated and the Rev. Ron Onder of the Lake Ariel United Methodist Church assisted.
