U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Wesleyan University, in 1842, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1845 and proceeded to practice law in Canaan, Connecticut, in 1847. He was a member of the Connecticut State House of Representatives, in 1857 and served in the Connecticut State Senate, (1866-67). In addition, he was judge of probate court, (1849-67) and judge of the Superior Court of Connecticut, (1867-87). In 1887, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fiftieth Congress, serving until 1889. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was elected Connecticut State referee in 1893 and served until his death at age 78.
