Herbert Michael Crane was born May 30, 1913 in Eastchester, Westchester, New York. Reportedly, he was the first child ever to be christened at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Scarsdale, where his father Michael Andrew Crane laid the cornerstone and helped build the church.

He was the 10th of 12 children born to Michael Andrew and Mary Agnes (Clinton) Crane. His twin brothers Michael and Andrew died in infancy (less than 1 day old); his sisters May and Marion died at 8 months and 3 months of age, respectively.

On the 1920 census, Herbert was living with his parents and his 7 remaining siblings at 20 Lee Avenue in Eastchester, New York. By the 1930 census, Herbert's brothers John and Walter, and their sister Lillian had all married and were out of the family house.

Herbert's father passed away in 1931, and by the 1940 census, Herbert was living with his mother and sister Ruth at 837 White Plains Rd. in Eastchester, New York, not far from the family home he grew up in.

According to World War II Army enlistment records, Herbert M. Crane enlisted on Mar 25, 1942 at Camp Upton Yaphank in New York as a Private. The U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs reported that he was released from service on December 10, 1945.

Herbert Michael Crane married Anne Cecilia O'Hara around 1954. They had 2 children. The family lived in several locations, notably Arizona and California.

At the time of his passing, Herbert was predeceased by his wife Anne, and 9 of his siblings. His daughter, Mary Agnes (named after Herbert's mother) passed away just 4 months after Herbert, on February 15, 1989.

Herbert was survived by his son, daughter-in-law and 3 grandchildren. He was also survived by his brother Walter and his wife Marie, his sister Helen Viola (Vi) Crane Morrissey as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and their children.

Aunt Vi and "Herbie" were especially close and she flew out to Arizona and California on a number of occasions to visit and spend time with him, Anne and the children. Shortly before his mother Mary Agnes (Clinton) Crane's death in 1959, she had enjoyed an extended visit with Herbert and his family in Arizona.

Herbert Michael Crane died October 6, 1988 in Long Beach, Los Angeles, California. Herbert and Anne Cecelia (O'Hara) Crane are buried in All Souls Catholic Cemetery and Mausoleum in Long Beach, Los Angeles, California.
