Amy Franklin Miles, age 74, passed away Tuesday afternoon, June 13, 2000 in her home following an extended illness. She was born Dec. 16, 1925 in Bryson City, NC to Andrew Jackson and Edith (Bryson) Franklin Jr. Amy was the valedictorian of Swain County High School in 1941 and graduated with honors from Duke University in 1946, where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. During World War II, she worked on a government project at Oak Ridge, TN. Mrs. Miles was a lifelong teacher, having taught both in North Carolina and in the Lake School System. She was a voracious reader and had a particular interest in anthropology. Amy was an adventurer, traveled extensively throughout the world and spoke seven languages. She was instrumental in bringing the library to Hartville and was a past president of Hartville Friends of the Library. Amy was one of the founders of the Lake Student Loan Program, served as president of the Hartville Sorosis Club, Hartville Garden Club and was a member of Congress Lake Club. Preceded in death by her husband, Hall B. Miles, Jr., June 28, 1998 and sister, Helen Franklin Newell. Amy was deeply loved by her three sons and daughters-in-law, of Hartville, of North Canton; seven grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law of Charlotte, NC. A Memorial service will be held Friday at 3 p.m. in the Hartville Church of the Brethren with Pastor Peter C. Kaltenbaugh officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday 6-8 p.m. in the Arnold Funeral Home in Hartville and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday 2-3 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Hartville Library Charitable Fund, c/o Stark County Foundation, Hartville Community Center Fund, 331 Market Ave. S., Canton, OH 44702
