Jesse Armistead Clift, a member of a prominent Nashville publishing family, died Saturday, July 7, 1999, at an area health care facility. Mrs. Clift, a resident of Chattanooga for 24 years, was a member of the Cheekwood Home, Centennial Club, National Society of Colonial Dames of America in Tennessee and St. George's Episcopal Church. She was a former member of the Ladies Hermitage Association, Polk Memorial Association and Belle Meade Country Club. She was preceeded in death by two husbands, Richard Norvell and Rhoton Clift; two sisters, Louise Armistead Stites and Anne Armistead Hibbett; and five brothers, Parkes, Leonard H., Carmack, James Hanner and George H. Armistead Jr. James Hanner Armistead was owner and publisher of The Review-Appeal in Nashville and a former editor of The Nashville Banner.

Survivors include her daughter, Anne Gayle Norvell of Nashville; two stepsons, Richard and William E. Norvell II; six stepgrandchildren; and 11 stepgreat-grandchildren. A private graveside service will be Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Mount Hope Cemetery in Franklin, Tenn. Memorial contributions may be made to St. George's Episcopal Church.
