Bernard Earl, the son of M. Earl and Mary Denby Russell was born July 27, 1928 on a farm near Webster City. His family moved to the Popejoy/Dows area when Bernard was yet young. Bernard attended and graduated from Dows High School in 1946. After high school, Bernard started farming. It would be his life's work.

Bernard was united in marriage to Norma Thompson on August 26, 1949 at the Lutheran Church in Ellsworth. The couple first started farming on a farm south of Coulter, where they farmed and lived for 15 years. In January of 1966, Bernard and Norma moved to the farm south of Dows. It was here Bernard was living at the time of his death.

Bernard served on several boards in the surrounding area. Most notably, he was the Secretary for North Central FS for 17 years, and served on the Coulter Creamery Board. His hobby was working and being outside at the farm. After retirement, Bernard and Norma traveled extensively on bus tours.
