Giles was the son of John Otis and Elizabeth Wingo Perdue. He married Sarah Jane Wray 8 August 1856. On the 1860 McDowell County, West Virginia, census, Giles was 25, Jane 22, Alie 2, Catherine 7 months, John (Otis) 80 and Elizabeth 75. When Mary Jane died in 1861 he moved back to Franklin County, and married Elizabeth Crook on 7 March 1866. Giles enlisted in the CSA as a private on 1 August 1862 at Rocky Mount, in the 37th Battalion Virginia Calvary known as Dunn's Battalion of Mounted Infantry. He was captured on 19 October 1863 later released at Point Pleasant Lookout.

Giles Perdue will:
I Giles Perdue of the State of Va and the county of Franklin in my seventy fifth 75 year of age, yet of sturdy mind make this my last will and testament. First my funeral buriel expenses together with all of my just debt be paid. Secondly to my wife Elizabeth Perdue all of my whole entire estate consisting of lands and personal property, bonds and monies to her to have and to hold during her widowhood and then at her decease to my three children, two daughers and one son by my first wife namely Alie Hogan & Catherine Dooley and Henry Perdue ten dollars each share and share alike then, the remainder of my estate to be equally divided between my seven children now living and to the heirs of E.L. Perdue deceased, those living namely Elizzie Perdue (Ozzie?) Laura ("Luzie"?) Robertson, Ulysses Perdue, Hettie Martin, E.L. Perdue deceased Sy (Seay?) Perdue, Hayes Perdue and Sulie Dillon the remainder of my whole entire estate to them to their heirs to have and hold forever, share and share alike this is my will and wishes that my estate shall be divided as above mentioned to which I set my hand and affix seal in the presence of S. S. Halley and Geo. A. Lyle. I also assign and appoint and elect my wife Elizabeth Perdue my executor to execute this my last will and testament as she is fit so to do without giving land or any security.
