WASHNGTONVILLE
Mrs. John Schaffernocker (whose maiden name was Rachel E. Rhodes) died at her home on West Main street at 4 o'clock Saturday morning, after a protracted suffering with dropsy and heart complications, although the final summons came peacefully and without a struggle.
She was born in Green township, Mahoning county, July 25, 1847, and was therefore in her 66h year. In early girlhood, she was baptized into the Swedenborgian church at Greenford, which has since gone into disuse and decay. Besides her aged mother, Mrs. Mary A. Rhodes of Greenford, she is survived by her husband, two sons, James Barnes of Salem, Harry C. of Leetonia; two daughters, Mrs. John Black of Cleveland and Mrs. Ralph Brain of this village; together with the following brothers and sisters: John and Lydia Rhodes of Greenford, Mrs. Alice Eyster of Washingtonville, Telford O. and Barbara Rhodes of Pittsburgh.
Mrs. Schaffernocker was a kind and obliging neighbor, and besides her household duties, she conducted a millinery business which gave her a wide acquaintance in this neighborhood; she died without a known enemy.
Funeral services were conducted from her late home at 1:30 Monday afternoon by Rev. Earl Lea of the Methodist church followed by interment in Oakland cemetery. The remains we enclosed in a beautiful couch casket surrounded by numerous floral offerings, including a wreath from the M.E. Aid society. The funeral was largely attended by her neighbors, relatives and friends. In addition to those already named above, the following persons from out of town were in attendance: Chris Stahl, wife and grand daughter, Chas. Cook and wife, Laura Schaffernocker, Mrs. Addison Coy, Mrs. Grant Elton and Mrs. L. A. Callahan all of Salem; Earl Weikart of Pittsburg; Dr. McCready, Mrs. S. E. McIntosh, G.W. Ballentine and wife of Leetonia, together with numerous friends from Greenford and surrounding country.
MAHONING DISPATCH - April 25, 1913
John Schaffernocker and his children desire to publicly express their thanks to all who came with words of consolation in their sad bereavement; to the pastor and choir of the M.E. Church for kind words and appropriate music and to the Ladies' Aid society and others for the beautiful flowers furnished for the funeral of his wife and their mother.
