Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War first as Lieutenant Colonel of the 31st New York Volunteer Infantry, then as Colonel and commander of the 36th New York Volunteer Infantry. He was wounded in battle, which ended his field service, and facilitated his transfer to the Veterans Reserve Corps. He commanded two units in the VRC, first the 23rd, then the 24th regiments before he was named as Acting Assistant Provost Marshal General for Baltimore, Maryland. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for “gallant and meritorious services during the War”.
