Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1852, and was serving as a 1st Lieutenant in the 9th United States Regular Infantry after the Civil War broke out. He was made first Captain, then Colonel of Volunteers in the Quartermasters Department, serving in a number of posts in the Western Theatre until being named Chief Quartermaster of the Department of the Missouri in November 1863. In this position he helped supply the vital Union forces in a large area divided between Union and Southern supporters. On March 13, 1865 he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers and Brigadier General, US Regular Army for “faithful and meritorious services during the war”. He remained in the Army after the end of the conflict, rising to Lieutenant Colonel before retiring in 1883.
