"by the Albemarle Parish Register, Captain John Mason died September 3, 1755; intestate, and his inventory was recorded December 8, 1755 in Sussex. Thre were no records of heirs but it is known that he had eight sons and several daughters. He had a brother Isaac Mason in Southampton County, who died in 1759, also intestate, leaving a wife Catherine. By the old English laws of primogeniture, his estate went to John Mason Jr., the oldest son of his oldest brother."
