George Manby was born in Denver, just a few miles from where he went to school in Downham Market.
As a teenager he experimented with mortars by shooting a mortar with an attached line over Saint Edmund's Church, there on the hill overlooking the town of Downham Market. No easy feat as Saint Edmund's is quite high!
At 17 he volunteered to fight in the American Revolution but was turned down because he was too young.
In 1813 George Manby invented the "Extincteur", the first portable pressurized fire extinguisher. This consisted of a copper vessel of 3 gallons of pearl ash (potassium carbonate) solution contained within compressed air.
He also invented a device intended to save people who had fallen through ice.
