U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Yale College in 1785, taught at the Plainfield Academy in 1876, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1788 and commenced to practice law in Farmington, Connecticut. He was a member of the Connecticut State House of Representatives, (1790, 1792, 1794-1805). In 1805, he was elected as a Federalist to the Ninth Congress to fill the vacancies caused by the resignations of Calvin Goddard and Roger Griswold, was reelected to the Tenth Congress and to the next five succeeding Congresses, serving until 1819. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law, was a delegate to the convention for the new Connecticut State constitution and was a member of the Connecticut State House of Representatives, (1819-30).
