Connecticut Governor. Educated at the South Egremont Academy Massachusetts, he became a successful manufacturer and was president of the H.B. Bigelow & Company. He was a member of the New Haven Connecticut City Council, (1863-76), a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1875 and was Mayor of New Haven, (1879- 81). In 1881, he was elected as a Republican the 33rd Governor of Connecticut, serving until 1883. While he was in office, legislation was enacted that disallowed deceptive election registration procedures, a bill was constituted that regulated companies of 12 or more employees to install fire escapes. Plus the Storrs Agricultural School was founded and assessments were cut back on mutual life insurance companies. After his term, he retired from public service and resumed his previous business interests until his death at age 51.
