Connecticut Governor. He graduated from Yale University in 1885, earned a doctoral degree in English literature in 1889, then taught and served as editor of the Yale Review. Entering politics in 1930, he was elected as a Democrat Connecticut's 54th Governor, serving until 1939. During his terms in office, he passed that restructured the state government, eliminated child labor and instituted a minimum wage rate. He also endorsed legislation that authorized funding for the rebuilding of the Connecticut State College. Retiring from public service after serving as Governor, he continued to stay active in his writing and research projects until his death at age 86.
