US Congressman, Senator, Connecticut Governor. He graduated from Yale University in 1797 and then pursued careers in the transportation and farming industries. He was a member of Connecticut's House of Representatives. He also was elected to the Sixteenth Congress, serving from 1819 to 1821 and elected to the Eighteenth Congress, serving from 1823 to 1825. He was elected as an Adams Democrat to the United States Senate, serving from 1827 to 1833 and elected to the Twenty-third Congress, serving 1833 to 1834. In 1834, he was elected as a Whig the 11th Governor of Connecticut, serving until 1835. During his short term, he dealt with Connecticut's ongoing financial recession. After leaving office, he served as a presidential elector on the Clay-Frelinghuysen ticket in 1844.
