LT. Ariel owned considerable tracks of land around and in South Hadley, of which town he owned a great part at one time. He served in the Revolution. He was a man of note in his day.
Ariel Cooley was an engineer and contractor of some distinction. He was the engineer and first proprietor of the Canal & Locks at the Falls at South Hadley begun in 1792. The construction involved 250 men in 1793, more in the following years. by 1801 the works had cost $81,373 exclusive of tolls. He built the canal at South Hadley Falls, which opened transportation past the falls of the Connecticut River at Holyoke, and operated the canal for many years. He built the first dam across the Connecticut at Holyoke, creating the beginnings of the immense water power there. He had the contract for a considerable unit of the water works system at Philadelphia, which he completed in 1820. He was the distinguished builder of Fairmount Waterworks at Philidelphia, he also build a dam on the James River at Schuylkill, PA.
Lt. Ariel Cooley left an estate valued at considerably more than $85,000.
About 1918 members of the family felt that the family buried in private cemetery should be moved to the South Hadley Falls cemetery that had perpetual care. The lawyer referenced the will at Holyoke and found it showing that Lt. Ariel Cooley had deeded the cemetery to the heirs. Thus it was possible to remove the Cooley family to the cemetery with perpetual care.
