Robert was a war correspondent for the American Red Cross.

In the early morning of November 26, 1943, Robert E. Lewis left Port Moresby, New Guinea by plane in route to Brisbane, Australia. Approximately seven minutes after takeoff, the plane crashed, and all aboard were lost. Port Moresby, is about 300 miles north east of Queensland, Australia and 1300 miles north west of Brisbane, Australia.

Originally, Robert was buried in Ipswich USAF Cemetery in Brisbane, Australia.

General Douglas MacArthur cabled the following message to the American Red Cross in Washington, D.C.: 26 November 1943

It is my painful duty to inform you of the death in New Guinea of Robert E. Lewis and Harry H. Poague in an airplane accident. Both served with courage and devotion and fulfilled the important duties of war correspondents with value to their country.

As part of "The Return of the World War II Dead Program 1946" his remains were disinterred and returned to the US and Interred in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific 14 Jan 1949, with full military honors for civilians who were in the service of the United States. Form and Flag sent to Next Of Kin 18 Feb 49.
