Russell Joseph "Pop" Stephens, 94, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 13th, 2014, at the La. War Veterans Home in Jackson, La. He was a native of Washington, La., and a long-time resident of Baton Rouge.

Russell is survived by his only child Janis Gandy & son-in-law Marion; grandchildren Scott, Eric, & Erin Gandy; grandson-in-law Greg Kelley; great-grandchildren Alexis Griffith & Wyatt Kelley; siblings Alfred Stephens, Jr., & Una Sacco; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Alfred & Edwina Stephens, Sr., and siblings Elaine Acosta, Eloise Stephens, George Soileau, Levy Soileau, Raphael Stephens, Howard Stephens, Leola Johnson, & Harris Stephens.

Russell worked as a machinist for 40 years and served in the Army as a tail gunner during WWII. His Cajun cooking was unmatched, and he was known for his love of gardening and LSU football. He had the ability to fix anything with moving parts, and will be remembered for the way he shone as a grandparent and the way he made us laugh, sometimes on purpose and sometimes not.

The family wishes to express our gratitude to the staff of the La. War Veterans Home for the compassion, love, and selflessness they showed in caring for Russell and for us.

Visitation with services immediately to follow at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd. Burial to follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation to create a day room for the residents of the La. War Veterans Home. Donations are being accepted by Janis Gandy.
