Fernande Leone Dubief Silver was born in Paris, France on February 9, 1905, the middle daughter of Marius and Marthe Dubief. Her widowed mother ran a small café near Orly airport during World War I and this is where she met her future husband.

After the war, her mother decided they should emigrate to the United States to keep the family together as the older sister had married an American soldier. Since they could not all come at the same time, Fernande, in 1920, age 15, made the trip alone to join her sister and husband in Indianapolis, Indiana. She and Ralph had kept in touch and when he went to Indianapolis to visit relatives they renewed their acquaintance. They were married there on June 4, 1924.

She is survived by her husband, Ralph, Lamoni; sons Bob, San Francisco; Ray, Tipton, Iowa; Maurice, Lamoni; Gary, Madrid; daughter Jacqueline Flowers, Cody Wyoming, also her younger sister Leone Ivars of Denia, Spain; twenty-six grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren and numerous grandnieces and nephews.

Fernande was a community-minded person and very interested in nature and conservation. She was a member of H.N. Club, American Legion Auxiliary, American Red Cross, a worker in the American Cancer Society for forty years, the Smithsonian Associates, the Audubon Society, the Cousteau Society, American Forestry Association, and the Nation[sic] Geographic Society. In her younger years, she was a willing worker in PTA and a cub scout den-mother.

Her many interests included bird watching, quilting, knitting, crocheting, and many other handcrafts. Her grandchildren have a quilt to treasure attesting to her skill as a quilt maker.

Her many friends and relatives will treasure her memory.

2.) Annual bird survey to be held here
Mrs. Ralph Silver reminds Lamoni residents that local members of the Iowa Ornithologists Union plan to conduct their usual mid-winter survey of bird species before Jan. 1. Last winter a total of 37 species were observed in this vicinity.

Mrs. Silver would appreciate getting reports of any of the following birds that may be seen: robin, bluebird, screech owl, mockingbird, purple finch, cedar waxwing, mourning dove, and red-headed woodpecker. Other more common winter species would also be of interest.
