Jessie Mae Taylor Woods, 99, passed away at Genevieve's Assisted Living Home on May 23, 2011, in Anchorage.

Jessie was born Jan. 1, 1912, in Blythesville, Ark., to Caroline and Redmond Taylor. Jessie was the middle child, Floy Fay the oldest and Bernice the youngest. All of Jessie's immediate family preceded her in death.

Jessie attended elementary and junior high school in Blythesville and completed high school in New Madrid, Mo. After graduation, she relocated to St. Louis, Mo., where she met and married Neediom Woods and bore James Woods, her only child. Neediom preceded Jessie in death.

Jessie became a certified cosmetologist in St. Louis, and in 1941, she moved to Seattle, Wash., and studied barbering. Jessie opened her own barber and beauty shop upon receiving her barbering certification, and for several years split her time between Fairbanks and Seattle, ultimately settling in Anchorage in 1949.

In Anchorage, Jessie attended nursing classes. She worked in the health care field at the old Providence Hospital for five years, and was subsequently employed at the Alaska Native Service Hospital for 25 years. Upon retirement, Jessie was actively engaged in the construction of the trans-Alaska pipeline.

When Bernice was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, Jessie moved her from St. Louis to Anchorage and cared for her until she could no longer provide her with adequate care. Bernice was then moved into the Mary Conrad Center, where Jessie regularly visited and ministered to her needs until Bernice's passing. During those visits, Jessie volunteered her time and efforts to other patients.

Jessie cultivated a beautiful yard and garden at her home in Anchorage's Fairview area. Neighbors enjoyed many meals from vegetables grown in her garden.

Civic and community involvement was a large part of Jessie's life. She was one of the founding members of Greater Friendship Baptist Church, a member of the Fairview Community Council, Anchorage Senior Center, Mabel T. Caverly Senior Center and Older Persons Action Group. When her health began to fail, she moved into Genevieve's Assisted Living home, where she remained for 10 years and received excellent care until her passing.

Left to remember Jessie's life are her son, James Hervel Woods and daughter-in-law, Romanita Woods of Anchorage; one grandson, James Woods of San Bernardino, Calif.; three granddaughters, Najila Woods of Altadena, Calif., Daina Decker, nee Woods, of Crestline, Calif., and Jamet Woods of Anchorage; and six great-grandchildren, Amanda, Melody and Robert Decker Jr. of Crestline, and D'ona, Nehemiah and D'son Woods of Southern California. She will be missed by her family.
