Elva Mae McCoy, born on September 30, 1931, was the 11th of 12 children born to Harvey and Kathryn McCoy of Hastings, Nebraska. Elva met and married Howard Mickenham of Turner, Oregon, in 1946. They had two daughters, Linda and Cynthia. She was widowed at age 28. She later married William Neal of Salem and they had a son Michael. Both William and Michael preceded her in death.

Forty-seven years ago, she met and married Jimmy Pierce, then stationed in San Diego in the Navy. They lived in San Diego for several years and upon his retirement, they moved back to Salem, Oregon. They lived in northeast Salem.

Elva, also known as Mickey, earned her nursing degree while in Nebraska and practiced nursing at both Salem Memorial Hospital and Salem General Hospital. Nursing was her life. She loved every minute she was able to care for her patients. Her career met an unfortunate premature ending when she was seriously injured on the job. She spent the rest of her life living with the pain caused by that accident.

Elva had eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, and is survived by her husband Jimmy. Visitation will be from1 to 3pm, Wednesday, January 29, at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service. Private interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery.
