Weapon Discharges
As Victim Goes
Through Wire Fence

Fatally shot when the 22-caliber rifle he was carrying accidentally discharged while he was climbing through a fence, Gerald Leander Butler, 48, R. D. No.l, Sandy, was found dead shortly after 2 p. m. Sunday near his home.

The victim was found by George Green, a neighbor, near the old Silica road just below Wasatch blvd. and a quarter of a mile north of the Old Mill, Big Cottonwood canyon.

Begins Search
Mr. Green was searching for the victim, who had left his home Saturday at 7 a. m. and failed to return.

Mrs. Ella (Billie) Birrell Butler, widow of the victim, became alarmed Saturday evening when her husband failed to return home. She notified relatives and friends who searched until midnight Saturday with no success. The search was resumed Sunday morning.

Accident Explained
Justice of the Peace A. Gideon Omer, 2217 E. 45th South, coroner, said the shooting was accidental, and the rifle apparently had been discharged as the victim attempted to pull it through the fence. He said the bullet struck Mr. Butler just below the heart.

Mrs. Butler told investigating Salt Lake county deputy sheriffs her husband frequently hunted in the hills east of his home and that she did not become alarmed until Saturday evening.

Butlerville Native
Born in Butlerville, March 18, 1896, the victim lived in that community all his life. He was a graduate of Jordan high school and a veteran of World War I.

In addition to his widow, he is survived by a daughter, Charlene, and a son, Gerald Lee. He also is survived by his mother, Mrs. Effie B. Staker, and three brothers, Merlin A., Clement and Henry L. Butler; a sister, Mrs. Harold B. Galvin, all of Butlerville, and another sister, Mrs. Eva B. Israelson, North Ogden.
