Margaret Tayler was the adopted daughter of John Tayler and the natural daughter of John and Eva (Van Valkenburg) Venor. She was married to Dr. Charles Dekay Cooper, the New York Secretary of State, and had five children:

John Tayler Cooper, Charles Dekay Cooper Jr, Elizabeth (Mrs Benjamin Nott), Margaret (Mrs. Joel Benedict Nott) and William Cooper.

The Notts were brothers and sons of Eliphalet Nott, one of the founders and presidents of Union College.
