Lee Emerson Welsh was born on 6 August 1920, in Toledo, Ohio. His parents are Ernest P. & Edna (Eckert) Welsh of Marion, Ohio. Lee E. Welsh attended Harding High School. He then worked as a smelter at Marion Steam Shovel Company.

Lee E. Welsh entered service in July of 1942. He was trained as an infantryman and stationed at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana; Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; and Camp San Luis Obispo, California. While home on leave he married Doril M. (Overdorff), on 10 July 1943. His wife had a brother, who was a Private on the Italian front. Pvt. Everet C. Overdorff had received the Purple Heart in action in Italy.

Pvt. Lee E. Welsh was sent for overseas duty in September of 1943. He was then stationed in Hawaii. Pvt. Welsh was serving as an infantryman with the 1st Infantry Regiment, 6th Infantry Division "The Sight Seeing Sixth" aka "Red Star Division." He was with the First when they went to New Guinea in February of 1944. Sadly on 9 March 1944, Pvt. Welsh drowned.

Mrs. Edna Welsh was working at the City Hospital, when she received the telegram stating that her husband had died. She returned home to find two letters had also arrived in the mail from her now deceased husband.

Pvt. Lee E. Welsh is buried in the Marion, Cemetery, Marion, Ohio.
Lee E. Welsh is remembered on the Honor Roll, at the Veterans Memorial Park, in Marion, Ohio; on the west wall of the Marion County Courthouse; and on the World War II Veterans Memorial Wall, at the Marion Cemetery.
