Worked for Kilgours of Buchan. By 1800 when the firm moved to Auchlee for the sake of water power, he worked in the counting house. In about 1802 he moved to Cothal and in 1805 formed a partnership with James Knowles, Alexander Rhind and Alexander Simpson, initially called Crombie Knowles & Company.
