She was born on Oct. 16, 1921, in Junction City, Ohio, to James L. and Stella J. Metcalf Charlton.
She was a 1940 graduate of Danville High School. She worked for many years as a cook for Northside Manor, also as a retail clerk for Rudins and Buckeye Mart, retiring in 1983. During her retirement, Betty was a foster grandparent at the Mount Vernon Developmental Center from July 10, 1995, until early December 2005.
She enjoyed going to the Station Break, golfing, crafting and was an excellent seamstress and an avid bingo player.
Surviving are son, Jerry (Becky) McCord of Sterling, Illinois; three daughters, Judy Estep of Mansfield, Dixie (Lee) Weideman of Lees Summit, Missouri, and Susan (Bob) Payne of Mount Vernon; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and her beloved dog, Max.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Orville G. McCord, of 46 years; an infant daughter, Deborah Sue McCord; three brothers, Lee, Ralph and Lester Charlton; and four sisters, Madelene Turner, Janette Nelson, Helen Christman and Mildred Hawk.
Friends may call on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at North-Dilley Funeral Home where funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Wesley Chapel Cemetery.Originally published January 13, 2006
