William Henry Beachum was the fifth of seven or nine children born to Hugh A. Beachum (1806-1861) and his wife Zillah "Zillie" O'Neal (1812-1882), of Anson County, North Carolina. His paternal grandparents were Alexander Beachum and his wife Elizabeth Shelton, and his maternal grandparents were Kindred O'Neal and his wife Culia Hayles, all of Anson County.

In the census records are accurate, he'd have been born between 6 June and 25 Sept. 1839. He married a Miss McIntire (perhaps Martha "Mattie" McIntyre) around 1861, and they had one son, William Henry Beachum, Jr. (c. 1862-1930).

William enlisted in the Confederate Army on 15 May 1862, age 22. He was assigned to Co. K, "The Anson Independents," of the 43rd North Carolina Regiment, Confederate States Army, in which his brothers, Joseph and James Thomas also served. (Their oldest brother Jeremiah was in Co. K, 26th NC Regiment.)

William Henry was either killed or died of illness on 18 November 1862, at Drewry's Bluff, Virginia. The place of his burial is unknown to me.
