Bobby Edward "Bob" Johnston, 88, of Cairo, MO, died Thursday, March 13, 2014. He was born October 11, 1925 in Clarence, MO, to Carl and Dena (Lowry) Johnston.

Bob was a decorated World War II veteran of the US Army, during the European Theatre, being awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received during the Battle of the Bulge, receiving an honorable discharge. He was a lifelong farmer, carpenter, supervisor with the Missouri Department of Corrections, and a plant supervisor at McGraw-Edison/Toastmaster both in Moberly. He was a member of the Jacksonville-Cairo Unity Christian Church.

He married Mary Louise Laytham on July 3, 1955, in Moberly, and she preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were his parents; a son, Nolan Johnston; a daughter, Bobbie Kehrees; brothers, Kenneth and Everett Johnston; a sister, Imogene Sullivan; and a son-in-law Jeff Twenter.

Survivors include his children, Nola Ann Goodrich and her husband, Jim; Kent Johnston, all of Jacksonville, MO; Mina Sue Garrett and her husband, Jeff of Kansas City, MO; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers, Stanley Johnston of Huntsville, Howard Johnston and his wife, Betty of Holly, MI; Geryl Lee Johnston and his wife, June of Macon; Bob's fiancé, Marg Corn; a brother-in-law, Robert Laytham and sister-in-law June Laytham; and several nieces and nephews.

Bob was an avid reader, enjoyed woodworking, cattle raising and general farm work. In later years, Bob enjoyed attending the Black Diamond Country Music Show in Macon with his fiancé Marg.

Memorial contributions to Cairo-Jacksonville Unity Christian Church or the North Park Church of God (Holiness) of Moberly would be appreciated.

Services honoring and celebrating Bob's life will be Monday, March 17, at 10:30 a.m., at the Cater Funeral Home Chapel, with committal prayers, military honors, and burial in the Woodville Cemetery. Words of comfort and support may be shared with the family at the visitation which will be Sunday, March 16, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Cater Funeral Home.
