Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Vigo di Cadore, Adeodato Giovanni Piazza entered the Order of Discalced Carmelites in 1902, professing his solemn vows in 1907. Ordained priest in December of the following year in Venice, he successively lectured at the houses of studies of his Order in San Vigilio, Adro and Brescia and later in the lyceum of Venice. Military chaplain during the Great War, serving among others at the Montecatini hospital, in the years which followed he served as secretary to the superior general of his Order in Rome from 1922 till 1925, when he was elected general procurator of the Order, an office which he held until 1930, when he was appointed archbishop of the metropolitan see of Benevento, receiving his episcopal consecration at the church of Santa Teresa al Corso d'Italia in Rome. Promoted to the patriarchal see of Venice on December 16, 1935, Pope Pius XI created him cardinal priest in the consistory of December 13, 1937 with the title of Santa Prisca. Appointed secretary of the Sacred Consistorial Congregation on October 1, 1948, Piazza opted for suburbicarian see of Sabina e Poggio Mirteto on March 14 of the following year. Superior general of the Scalabrinian Fathers, he visited various missions such that many referred to him as "the Cardinal of the emigrants". A gifted musician, poet, orator and writer, Piazza succumbed to pneumonia after suffering two cerebral strokes and was laid to rest in the same church in which he received his episcopal consecration.
