George served as a Second Lieutenant and Pilot on A-20G-20-DO Havoc #42-86717, 8th Service Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Coos County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

A-20G #42-86717 took off, with a crew of 3, on a training mission from Nadzab Airfield, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea to Lae, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea.

After takeoff they were not seen nor heard from again. It was later found out that they crashed into a steep slope in the Saruwaged Range, a few miles north of Nadzab Airfield. All three crew members were lost.

George was "Killed In Action" in the "Line Of Duty" in this crash during the war.

Also on this same training mission was A-20G #42-54155 which also crashed during their mission. ( see below )

REMAINS OF BERLIN VETERAN TO ARRIVE

BERLIN--The remains of 2nd Lieut. George A. Campagna, son of Mr. and Mrs. Octave Campagna of 598 Sullivan Street, Berlin, N.H., will arrive here Friday, July 9.

Lieut. Campagna was born here, March 9, 1922, the son of Octave and Clarice Letourneau Campagna. He attended local schools and entered the Army Air Forces July 31, 1942. He was killed in action in New Guinea, Oct. 4, 1944.

Surviving besides his parents are three brothers, Leo of Medford, Mass., Gerard of Ayer, Mass., and Richard of Berlin; two nieces and nephews.
