Mary Ruth Berrett, a lifelong resident of California, died peacefully at home on August 29, 2013, after waging a courageous battle against cancer. She was born August 24, 1925 in Santa Cruz, the daughter of Malcolm Samuel and Ruth Wilson Freeman. Her one sibling, Reed Freeman, preceded her in death.
Mary graduated from the College of San Mateo. She met Stanford Law student John Richard (Jack) Berrett while living in Palo Alto. Mary and Jack were married in 1948, and after making their home for a short time in Sacramento, they moved to Menlo Park. Mary's beloved Jack passed away in 2004 while they were vacationing on a cruise.

Mary served her community for many years through volunteer work at resale shops, including the Menerton Shop, where she was shop manager, Treasures, and the Bargain Box. She was a member of the Menertons and the Atherlons, and cherished the many friends she met through these organizations. Mary delighted in her home, where she had lived for 60 years. She enjoyed travel, reading, music and gardening, and she participated in Jazzercize for more than 30 years. Mary had a sweet and loving disposition, and was truly young at heart. She was devoted to her family and is dearly missed by her children, Judith, Bellevue, Washington, and Richard, of Menlo Park.

A memorial service was held on Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at 2:00 pm at Menlo Park Presbyterian Church.
