Richard Carlton moved to an area north of Methuen and Haverhill. Later, he became a taxpayer in Salem, New Hampshire in 1741 (the Massachusetts and New Hampshire border moved); signed a petition to Gov. Wentworth of New Hampshire to form a separate township of those parts of Haverhill and Methuen that lay within the borders New Hampshire in 1742. At the first town meeting of Salem, New Hampshire, Richard was named on a committee to survey highways.
