NOTES
Most other references show his birth date as 1750-1755. Given the ages of his children, that makes sense. Johnny Long says he died in October 1836.
He married Susannah Vannoy and Nellie Phipps, daughter of Joseph Phipps (born about 1730 of Guilford County, North Carolina).
He as well as his neighbor John Taylor were pioneer to the Ashe County, NC area.
Children with Susannah Vannoy:
1. Martha "Patsy" Long, b. 1775, d. 1865 m. 1795 John Taylor Jr. Their parents (John Long Sr. and John Taylor Sr.) owned neighboring farms, per Johnny Long.
2. Leah Long, b. 5/5/1779, d. 7/13/1862 m. 1798 John Jones

Notes from member 46532185 Carole Conrad:
According to Research of Johnny Long, John Long was buried on an island in the New River near his land and the Farmer's Fish Camp Rd probably with his wife.
The wills for both John and Tobias have no clues for the name of the wife of John Long, Sr.
Also, there are no clues in any of the land deeds.
John Long lived in Montgomery County, Va. (present day Grayson County, Va.) in the 1770's and early 1800's.
His son, John Jr., was born there in September, 1783.
I found him on an original Militia Muster Roll located in the basement safe of the Montgomery County, Va. Courthouse in Christiansburg, Virginia.
Cox's Company, Prob. 1782. On List of Captain James McDaniel's Company, ca. 1782.
On March 5, 1782, the Cox Company was divided for the third time when James McDaniel was made Captain in the lower part of this Company.
On April 3, 1782, George Reeves was recommended as Lieutenant, and John Long, as Ensign.
