Nelson, who was a Delaware Native, graduated from the University of Delaware in 1968 with a degree in Physical Education. He was studying for a graduate degree in Business Administration at the University of Maryland at the time of his passing and was also stationed at Fort George G. Meade in Maryland.
He had been in the Army for about 2 years and was commissioned a Captain thru the R.O.T.C. program.
While driving home his vehicle was hit head-on by another vehicle that had crossed over the medial strip and he was killed instantly. His wife, Marianna Fournier Slaughter, was also seriously injured in the accident and died 11 days later.
He was the son of Nelson Paul Slaughter, Sr. and Betty Jane Phillips.
