Harry Douglas Atherton, age 89, of Beaver Dams, passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Corning Hospital.

He was born on June 1, 1924 in Wellsboro, the son of Harry Richard and Jenny (Whittemor) Atherton.

He married Eleanor Wilcox on July 4, 1947 in Wellsboro. She predeceased him on January 24, 2005.

Harry was a veteran of the US Army during WWII and a lifetime member of the VFW.

He retired from Corning, Inc in 1983. A member of the Shanty Shifters Camping Group, he enjoyed camping, bowling, horseshoes, hunting, and fishing.

He is survived by son, Lee (Donna Fisk) Atherton of Beaver Dams; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Alton Smith of Addison; daughter-in-law, Norma Atherton; grandchildren, Heather (Rob) Barlow, Deanna (Steve) Stewart, Terry (Tonya) Horton, Douglas Atherton, Amy Atherton, Trisha James, and Kris (Becky) Smith; great-grandchildren, Sarra, Anthony, Keri, Keli, Haden, Halle, Jaylen, Skylar, Aubrey, Abagale, and Zachary.

Harry was predeceased by a son, Harry Dennis Atherton, sisters, Margaret Davis and Jane Curry, and a niece, Jenny Jane Porter.

Family and friends are invited to call at Carpenter's Funeral Home, LLC, 14 East Pulteney Street in Corning on Thursday, March 13, 2014 from 6:00pm to 8:00 pm and on Friday from 10:00am to 11:00 am.

A celebration of Harry's life will follow the calling hours there at 11:00am. Burial will take place at Beaver Dams Cemetery.
