J.B. BURCKHALTER DEAD.
The Popular Attorney Departed This Life Shortly After 2 O’clock.
James B. Burckhalter died at 2:15 o’clock today after an illness of two weeks, suffering from inflammatory rheumatism which finally reached his heart.
For several days his life had been despaired of but skillful physicians and tender nursing kept him alive.
Mr. Burckhalter was universally respected. He was a young man with a promising future. An attorney of ability and promise, Mr. Burckhalter command a lucrative practice. He served as local attorney for the M.K.& T. railroad company.
The deceased leaves a wife and three children.
The funeral services will be held at St. John’s church tomorrow (Sunday) at 2:30 o’clock p.m. The active pallbearers will be W.L. Chapman, Edgar Smith, C.L. Croninger, W.B. Coley, W.M. Mellette and W.P. Thompson.
The honorary pallbearers will be Clifford L. Jackson, Judge E.G. Tollett, George Blakeney and Judge Tibbils.

JAMES B. BURCKHALTER.
James Buchanan Burckhalter was born in Aiken county, South Carolina, in 1865. Moved with his parents to Aiken, the county seat of Aiken county, at the age of ten. Received his early education in the common public schools in the above town, and later entered the high school of the same town. Finished his education in South Carolina college, of Columbia, S.C., in 1883. Taught school in his own county one year, and one year at Washington, Georgia. Entered the law office of G.W. Croft for the study of law in the spring of 1886, and was admitted to practice law before the supreme court of the state of South Carolina in May, 1887. After being admitted he located at Barnwell, S.C. He associated himself with his preceptor under the style of Croft & Burckhalter, where he enjoyed a very nice practice for six years. He was married to Kate M. Myers, of Hendersonville, S.C., December 23rd, 1892. On account of the extreme poor health of his wife, he had to seek a new field, and moved to the territory, locating at Vinita in 1893, where he associated himself with Major Gore under the style of Gore & Burckhalter. Two years later, account of Mr. Gore’s failing health, he succeeded him. A little later he formed a partnership with John B. Turner, of Fort Smith, Arkansas, under the style of Turner & Burckhalter, and continued in the partnership for a period of two years, when he dissolved the partnership and practiced by himself.
