Clarence "Sox" ARGYLE
Clarence "Sox" or "Gummy" Johnson Argyle passed away peacefully with his family around him on March 10, 2014 in Whittier, CA. He is survived by his wife Joyce Banks Argyle, daughters, Cherie Hardy and Michelle Jackson, sons, David and Jon Argyle, 20 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Lorna Miller and Laurel Bona and his brother Gerald J. Argyle.
Sox was born in Spanish Fork, UT on December 28, 1928 to Clarence and Lola Argyle. He attended Brigham Young University before going on a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Upon his return, "Sox" enlisted into the U.S. Air Force where he became a radar and radio specialist. In the Air Force, he met and fell in love with Joyce Banks and they married.
After the couple served in the Air Force, they moved to Whittier, California.
Sox worked for Summa Corporation as part of Howard Hughes' personal staff for 25 years. He then worked for Davis & Cox Law Firm and the Los Angeles Police Credit Union and retired. Sox soon inquired about a volunteer program at the Whittier Police Department. He became part of the first class of the Whittier Police Volunteers and served for 13 years. Along with all of Sox's work obligations, Sox managed to volunteer and loved every minute of it. By far his favorite job was working security at Dodger Stadium in the 60's and 70's wearing Dodger Blue. He loved the game. In his prime, Sox was a fast pitch softball legend in Southern California. He played on many teams, some times playing four times a week.
Sox was a wonderful husband, father, brother, uncle and grandpa. He loved to restore old cars and keep a beautiful yard. He also loved golf in his later years. He loved life. He had thick skin with a huge, soft heart. His beautiful, kind blue eyes would honestly tell you how much he loved and cared. He led an incredible life and we were lucky to have him in our lives for as long as we did.
Memorial services will be on March 21, 2014 at the Granada LDS Ward Chapel, 15100 East Cordova, La Mirada, CA at 3:00 pm Graveside will be at the National Cemetery in Riverside
