Roman Catholic Cardinal. The son of a professor of letters, Pierre-André-Charles Petit de Julleville was born in Dijon but was raised in Paris following his father's appointment as a member of the faculty staff of the École Normale Supérieure. Frequenting the University of La Sorbonne, Pierre entered the Seminary of Saint-Sulpice in 1899 and was ordained priest in July 1903. Member of the teaching staff of the Grand Seminary of Issy between 1905 and 1910, he served as a military chaplain during the Great War. In his earlier days he had also rendered military service in the 28th infantry regiment in Èvreaux between 1897 and 1898. Appointed bishop of his native Dijon in June 1927, he received his episcopal consecration on September 29 that year. Promoted to the metropolitan see of Rouen on April 7, 1936, Pope Pius XII created him cardinal priest in the consistory of February 18, 1946 with the title of Santa Maria in Aquiro. A cold cut short his life in December that year. Known for his intellect as a man who deeply loved reading and writing, his interest in education along with his simplicity of character remained a legacy in France, which had him through the years, decorated with the Croix de Guerre and the Légion d'honneur.
