chael S. Cherry, age 85 of Warren, died Friday, February 28, 2014 at the Autumn Woods Health Care Facility in Warren. He was born on December 14, 1928 in Detroit, son of the late Julian and the late Frances (nee: Zielinski) Cherry.

With thanks & praise from a grateful nation, we pay homage to Michael for his service to our country during the Korean War years. As an airman in the United States Air Force, he ultimately attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and served with honor and distinction for the country he loved. For the call to duty he so proudly served, and his willingness to stand in harm's way for our allies and the cause of freedom, we remain grateful for the role he played as part of our country's "Greatest Generation."

Michael was the beloved husband of Charlotte. Dear father of Rodger and Allen (Roma). Loving grandfather of Paige. Brother of Tom (Joan) Cherry, Paul (Nancy) Cherry, Jim (the late Fran) Cherry, and the late Gloria (the late Bud) Aikens.

Michael was raised in Detroit where he attended Pershing High School and in 1961 married Charlotte. They moved to Warren where they raised their two sons. Michael was the consummate "tinkerer". From airplanes to washing machines, he had an uncanny ability to solve the problem. One of his passions was boating, the industry to which he dedicated most of his career. He traveled the world (see Letter from Seattle-see Rodger's entry in the Memory Book section) assisting customers with marine engine problems and solutions.

When Michael was not working, he enjoyed spending time with his family. He also had a passion for racing cars, racing boats, and World War II aircraft. In 1954, after returning home from Japan during the Korean War, he worked at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as a mechanic. He loved to watch car racing on television and reflect back on his younger years and how it has changed over time.

Michael's presence often times could be exemplified with the following:

"There is no force in the world that has a greater impact than the statement of a knowledgeable man fortified by confidence and experience. A man who knows, and knows he knows can speak with authority that has no comparison. The world stands aside for a man who knows what he's doing. Knowledge, confidence, experience and authority are the cornerstones of getting someone's attention"

Michael would surely like to thank his loving wife who stood by his side for so many years. Charlotte was Michael's caregiver for the last 15 years. Devoted to the very end, Charlotte tended to his every need after Michael's stroke in 1999. "They don't make them like that anymore"! Thank You.

And to Michael's granddaughter Paige – "Our time was far too short, but I leave you in the caring hands of your Mom and Dad who will no doubt help you develop into a special young lady that will be caring and kind."

A springtime luncheon is scheduled on Lake St. Clair to celebrate Michael's life and enjoy one of his favorite places to spend his leisure time.

Visitation for Michael will be held on Tuesday, March 4th from 5-9pm, with a 7pm Funeral Service, at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 ½ Mile Road) in Warren. He will be laid to rest, with military honors, at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan.

Memorial donations are welcomed to the American Stroke Association, Midwest Affiliate, 3816 Paysphere Circle, Chicago, IL 60674.
