Married (1) Emily Morgan September 3, 1835 in Coles County, Illinois

Married (2) Margaret Bolin September 9, 1849 in Coles County, Illinois

No where is his name ever officially recorded as "Thornton Samuel", even though that is what some of the descendants say that it was and was stated as such in the big Yocum Genealogy Book by Dr. H. S. Smith.

I have found numerous errors in the Yocum Book, so please do not believe everything in that book. Do your own research. Even “The Prairie Sleeps” contains errors because it shows him buried in Coles Co., IL based on a tombstone that was erected based on assumption, not fact. It is newer than the MO tombstone and also has no death date inscription.

Anything before 1838 simply refers to him as either "Thornton" or "Thornton S.". Even his tombstone does not include "Samuel”.

LAND PATENTS: 10 Aug 1838, Bureau of Land Management records show his middle name to be "Strouder and Strowder" on three of the patents. His own signature may be on the original records.
1. Land Patent #3658 (Accession #IL2480__.172) 10 Aug 1838: "Thornton Yocom of Cole Co., Illinois...the North East Quarter of the North West quarter of Section fourteen in Township Eleven North of the base line of Range Seven East of the Third principal meridian in the District of lands subject to sale at Vandalia, Illinois containing forty acres."

3. Land Patent #6542 (Accession #IL2530__.419) 08/10/1838 : "Thornton Strowder Yocum, of Coles County, Illinois...the South West quarter of the South West quarter of Section ten, in Township eleven North of the base line, of Range seven, East of the third principal meridian, in the District of Lands subject to sale at Vandalia, Illinois, containing forty acres."

The above three are from Bureau of Land Management, Eastern States, General Land Office, Patents Found on their website located at: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/asp/response.asp?SearchType=1
