Mrs. Glennis Hiers passed away peacefully Sunday, March 9, 2014, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro. She was 90 years old and lifelong resident of Bulloch County. Glennis was born August 24, 1923, in a tin-roofed wooden house on a dirt road across the street from the home she eventually built in 1959, and the only home she owned and lived in until she entered into the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. She graduated from Statesboro High School in 1941 and looked forward in later years to attending the annual class reunions. Following graduation, she worked at the McCleenan's Five & Dime store on North Main Street in Statesboro, where she met her future husband, Burney Hiers. She also worked at the First Federal Savings and Loan in Statesboro as an accounting clerk for many years and was trained on and operated one of the first computers. She was a lifelong member of Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church.

Glennis loved children, animals and her husband, Burney and she was an accomplished cook. She baked cakes for neighbors and friends and was famous for her red velvet, coconut and caramel cakes, among other delicacies.

Glennis was preceded in death by her father, Logan Allen; her mother, Annie Jones Allen; and her beloved husband, Burney.

She is survived by her son, Don Hiers (Darlene) of Homosassa, Fla.; and two daughters, Kathy Hunt (Randy), Lakeland, Fla., and Michele Shelar (Bruce), Gainesville, Fla.; as well as seven grandchildren, Ryan Hunt, Jill Markham, Emily Hankins, Ben Hiers, Scott Shelar, Cheri Cesario and Phillip Shelar. Glennis was a great-grandmother to 11 children and has numerous cousins in Bulloch and surrounding counties.

A visitation will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 13, 2014, at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. with Elder John Scott and the Rev. Gene Hiers officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jared Akins, John Mulherin, John Dotson, Ryan Hunt, Chris Hiers, Dana Hiers, Ben Hiers and Phillip Shelar.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, GA 30459, in Glennis' name.

Joiner-Anderosn Funeral Home of Statesboro is in charge of the arrangements.
