GEO. W. NUSBAUM
The Passing of An Old and Highly Respected Citizen
Once again the golden bowl is broken. The silver cord loosened and death has taken a husband, father, grandfather, friend and neighbor. Thursday evening, March 12, 1928, as the clock showed 7:20, a life of more than four score years and one, passed away so quietly that day itself died out so calmly. George W. Nusbaum, son of Christian and Catherine Nusbaum was born near Ashland, Ohio, Jan. 12, 1847. He came to Elkhart county when two years old. There were ten children in this family, and but one member, a sister, Mrs. McClintic of Elkhart survives.
In 1872 he was married to Sarah Bly, also of a pioneer family.
His boyhood days were spent on a farm and his educvation, such as the country schools afforded at that time, was received from the public schools of the county. He has witnessed the development of Wakarusa from the bog and mire into a beautiful town.
For years he was an active member of the Masonic lodge of this place and served as master a number of years. Two years ago wit others he transferred to Tyrian lodge, No. 718 at Elkhart. Some 54 years ago he united with the Baptist church and served in an official capacity. He was postmaster of Wakarusa for 12 years.
He is survived by his wife and three daughters, Mrs. W.C.B. Harrison of Ligonier, Mrs. H.m.Freed and Mrs. Bert Layer of this place and three grandchildren. A son, Morton Nusbaum, died when three years old.
Brother Nusbaum possessed a number of praiseworthy characteristics, his industry being an outstanding one. He enjoyed a plain, simple, unpretentious life. He loved and cherished his home and family and found inspiration around his fireside. For 56 years he and his loving companion had walked life's pathway together.
The home has lost a kind and affectionate husband and father, the community, a good citizen. Funeral services in charge of the Masonic lodge were held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the home. Rev. G.A.P. Jewell of the Methodist church gave the address. Burial at Olive.
