U.S. Congressman. He attended Greensburg Academy, studied law while he apprenticed as a printer, was admitted to the bar in 1849, and commenced to practice law in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. He was district attorney for Westmoreland County (1850 to 1855) and a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate (1858 to 1860). In 1875, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth and Forty-fifth Congresses, serving until 1879. After leaving Congress, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
