2nd Lieutenant Tate was the Navigator of U.S. Army Air Corps B-24D Liberator #41-1117, serving with the 44th Bomber Group, 66th Bomber Squadron. He was killed when his bomber crashed after takeoff from Barksdale Army Air Base in Louisiana, while departing for an anti-submarine patrol mission over the Gulf of Mexico.
