Kenneth R. Byers, 89, of Kent, OH, died Thursday, October 3rd, 2013 after a three week bout with cancer, lying ten feet from his unfinished airplane, looking out over Dollar Lake, surrounded by his family.

He was born August 15, 1924 in Boston, OH to John and Lillian Hazel (Wilson) Byers. He was a World War II combat B-24 pilot in the 8th Air force. He worked for twenty years at Colonial Machine, attended Ohio University and Kent State University, and loved fishing, camping, dogs, sailing, and his red Mercedes convertible which he purchased two months ago at age 89. (Did we say adventurous?) He loved life and was known by all as a friendly, happy and contented person. (Did we say, the way to live life?) Ken loved his wife of forty-three years (Bruce Staples Byers, who died in 2000).

Ken Byers lived a loving and adventurous life. He was best known for his love of his family…and his love of flying airplanes. Ken was building three real airplanes in his home…always working on the one in his living room…overlooking Dollar Lake in Kent (Did we say eccentric?)

He is survived by his sons, Rob (Robin) Byers of Westerville, OH, Bruce (Andrea) Byers of Dunwoody, GA, Whitney Byers of Charlotte, NC, Christopher (Dianna) Byers of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Heather Lynn (Mark) Kline of Punta Gorda, FL; brothers, Donald (Ramona) Byers of Barnesville, OH, and William (Eloise) Byers of Kent, OH, and long term companion, Patricia Glidden.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Virginia Criss; brothers, Roland Byers & Robert Byers and grandson, Jordan Kline.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, October 5th, 2013 at Christ Episcopal Church 18 South Mantua Street Kent, Ohio 44240, with Rev. Julie Blake Fisher officiating. Calling hours will be held 4:00 until 5:00 PM Saturday, following the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of The Western Reserve - Lorain County, 424 Middle Avenue, Elyria, OH 44035; American Cancer Society, 525 North Broad Street, Canfield, OH 44406, or Christ Episcopal Church, 118 S. Mantua Street, Kent, OH 44240.
