Nebraska Governor. After graduating from the University of Michigan, at the age of 16, he worked as a geologist on a scientific expedition for minerals in the Lake Superior region. During the Mexican American War, he served as a Sergeant in the 1st Michigan Infantry Regiment. After the war, he became writer-editor for the Keokuk Dispatch newspaper at Keokuk, Iowa. Relocating to the Nebraska territory, he was appointed the first Secretary of the newly formed Territory, on October 8, 1854. With the death of Governor Francis Burt on October 18, 1854, Cuming became Acting Governor, serving until the arrival of Governor Mark W. Izard, on February 23, 1855. He then resumed his duties as Territorial Secretary. Following the resignation of Governor Izard, Cuming became Acting Governor again serving October 25, 1857, to January 12, 1858. After leaving off, he died suddenly at the age of 30 while on a trip to Omaha, Nebraska.
