Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of Paul and Jean Zeek Hapeman, of Plains Township. She was a 1970 graduate of Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre. She attended King's College, Wilkes-Barre.
She had been employed by the Luzerne County Medical Society, Wilkes-Barre, and lived in various parts of the country until moving to Tennessee in 1986.
While a local resident, she was a member of the East End Primitive Methodist Church, Wilkes-Barre.
She was also a member of Trenton Street Baptist Church, Harriman, Tennessee and was a member of the choir, hand bell choir and as a Sunday school teacher. She was also treasurer of the Harriman High School Band Boosters.
Surviving are her husband, Thomas B. Powell, Harriman, Tenn.; daughter, Kimberley A. Hartman, both of Harriman, Tenn.; brothers, Dwight, Camp Hill; Mark, Plains Township; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
