He was the son of Arthur and Emma (Nicholson) Montgomery.

On Jan. 5, 1946, in Fort Wayne, he married Marjorie Elizabeth Kennedy, whom he met while in the Army.She preceded him in death Dec. 20, 2003.

While in the U.S. Army, Gene served as a tech sergeant under the command of Charles Mayo of the Mayo Clinic. He earned many ribbons and medals, including the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star Medal and World War II Victory Medal.

Gene was a salesman for Robin Hood Flour for 27 years. After retiring, he became an auctioneer for seven years. Later, he and his wife owned and operated an antique shop in Reddington for more than 25 years.

He graduated from Shields High School.

Gene was a member of Reddington Christian Church, having served as a Sunday school teacher, an elder and board member. Gene was a member of the Gideons for more than 13 years and also was a member of American Legion Post 89.

He was preceded in death by his wife and parents.

A funeral service conducted at Voss Chapel with the Rev. Bill Weaver officiating.

Burial will take place at Reddington Cemetery with full military services conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925, American Legion Post 89, Disabled Veterans 47, Korean and Vietnam Veterans.
